Expanding Traditional Skills through SHG Support
Three self-help groups of Muslim women in Islampur village in Jhunjhunu district were formed. These women belong to Madiyars, who traditionally make and sell lac bangles. The groups were named Sangam, Saiyad and Gauri Bangles and have 33 members in all. To begin with the women did not have confidence, but after association with SHGs not only their confidence got a boost, but also their hesitation went away.
All the three SHGs got loans form the bank and one group got repeat loan. They also got revolving fund from the project. With sufficient amount at their hands the women were able to purchase raw material (lac) in large quantities so they can produce bangles round the year. Earlier, they were able to do work only during the season. They sell their produce at Jhunjhunu, Singhana, Khetari and Chirawa.
With increased income their life has improved. Now their children are attending better school. These women have emerged as a source of motivation. Seeing them other women have started associating themselves with SHGs. The group members say, “This has come as a new light in their lives and improved their status in family, society and village.”
